Book Review: Epi-Paleo RX by Dr. Jack Kruse
Introduction
Jack Kruse, who is a neurosurgeon and quantum biologist (not sure he would call himself that though) wrote this book in 2013. With that being said he was way ahead of his time in terms of nutrition, although listening to him on a lot of podcasts recently it seems like he would put nutrition 4th or 5th on the list of things that are important. Currently he would say light is #1 followed by water and magnetism (not sure if there is an order for the last 2). I think anyone who has found Jack Kruses’s work would tell you it has changed their life, and I would agree with that. Generally I follow the introduction with a takeaway’s section, which I will do, but literally this whole book is a takeaway so I just picked some random things I found most important. He talks a lot about cold thermogenesis, and it’s not really something i’m too interested in, so I will do more of the takeaways from nutrition. With that being said, this book is a must buy for anyone.
9 Major Takeaways:
Cholesterol is an essential component of cell membranes and up to 70% of our brain is made from cholesterol. Not only that but cholesterol also patches areas of blood vessels that are damaged by inflammation. Oxidized cholesterol is what is associated with heart disease. -Hint: the main cause of oxidation is inflammation -”Cholesterol is the dynamite, inflammation the match”- Kruse. “Lipids don’t cause heart disease, inflammation does”
“The system is set up to keep you sick” -Jack Kruse- I couldn't agree more
“It isn't genes alone that determine our health destiny, but instead it’s our food and lifestyle choices (Jack would say this the other way around in 2024, lifestyle first). Gene’s do not control us, they respond to what we do”. Even when I was in grad school, we learned that genetics is triggered by the environment, just because you are predisposed to something does not mean that it’s inevitable.
“Poor thoughts begin with poor foods” -Jack Kruse. Literally all the nutrients we eat have a function, and a major function is to create neurotransmitters in the brain which will affect how we think.
Vitamin D is related to many diseases from obesity to heart disease to cancer. Levels above 50 ng/ml are associated with increased adiponectin levels (which means leptin is low). It’s also associated with leaky gut, MS, ALS, and Guillain-Barre. Also higher vitamin D levels are associated with longer telomere lengths.
Calcium supplementation for osteoporosis leads to negative health outcomes, it leads to calcification of arteries in the wrong place. Supplementing with K2 is the best thing you can do because it carboxylates osteocalcin which directs calcium to the right tissue.
Raw pastured dairy is high in K2
“The introduction of artificial light altered our ability to sense light and dark. I think most people are aware of the degree to which circadian mismatches destroy metabolic function, laying the foundation for diseases”
Iodine and DHEA are critical in a well functioning brain
Conclussion:
This is an awesome introduction into quantum biology. It takes the lens of nutrition, however it starts tying all the pieces together. I highly recommend reading this book interested in health.
